Darien Scores and Standings, Aug. 9

• Baseball: Former Darien pitchers Devin Burke and Ricky Hodges, who once again will be teammates next spring at Virginia Tech, recently completed their summr league seasons.

Burke played with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League, which is considered one of the most prestigious college summer leagues in the country.

Used in short relief, he made 17 appearances, posting a 5.93 ERA without receiving a decision. He allowed 26 hits and walked 17 over 27 1/3 innings with 27 strikeouts.

Hodges spent the summer playing for the Mystic Schooners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Also used primarily in relief, he was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 appearances.

Hodges recorded six saves, allowing 18 hits and eight walks in 21 innings while striking out 17.

His longest outing of the season came in his final appearance as he tossed 3 1/3 innings, yielding just one hit, in a 5-3 loss to Holyoke on July 29.

Hodges, who graduated from Darien in 2010, is heading into his second year at Virginia Tech, but will a freshman eligibilty-wise as he redshirted last season.

Burke, a 2009 Darien graduate, will be a sophomore as he sat out last year after transferring from Duke, where he was 3-1 with an 8.13 ERA.

• Swimming: Jake Greene, Tyler Gould, Steven Grune, Chris Weihs, Caroline Orem and Liza Bragg represented the Darien Piranhas swimming club at the super sectionals in Pittsburgh.

The Piranyas' quartet of Greene, Grune, Gould and Weihs finished 16th in the 800-meter freestyle relay with a time of 8:11.37. Bragg was 34th in the women's 200-meter breaststroke (2:27.72).

Also, Erik Ryan will be representing Connecticut Swimming at the Eastern Zone Age Group Championship meet in the 11-12 division. The meet takes place Wednesday through Sunday at Penn State University in State College.
