The boys hockey team earned its first win of the season Monday with a 6-1 victory over archrival New Canaan at the Darien Ice Rink.
The Blue Wave improved to 1-1, giving Chris Helwig his first victory as Darien's new coach.

New Canaan dropped to 0-2 and has been outscored 9-1 in its first two games. The Rams opened their season with a 3-0 loss to Notre Dame of West Haven.
Grayson Horan and Owen Koorbusch scored in the opening period to stake the Blue Wave to a 2-0 lead.

In the second period, Brendan Hathaway and Nick Bruno scored to extend Darien's advantage to 4-0. Alec Foresta rallied twice in the third period to complete the victory.
Max Rothston made 19 saves for Darien, only giving up a goal to Henry Stanton in the middle stanza.
Chris Koennecke made 16 saves for New Canaan, which could be facing a transitional year. The defending two-time FCIAC champions lost 18 players off last year's roster via either graduation or transfers to private schools.

After a pair of lopsided losses to Ridgefield and defending Class LL state champion St. Joseph, the Darien boys basketball team hopes for a more competitive showing at Trumbull on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
The Blue Wave averaged only 27 points in the defeats to Ridgefield (70-20) and St. Joseph (76-34).
Trumbull (1-1) is coming off its first win of the season, a 73-70 double overtime victory over Westhill.

The Darien girls will try end Trumbull's 27-game FCIAC winning streak when the Blue Wave host the Eagles at 5:30 p.m.
Darien (2-1) also will be looking to rebound from Friday's 50-35 loss to undefeated St. Joseph (4-0).
Trumbull also off to a 4-0 start, but the Eagles needed to rally from a fourth-quarter deficit to hold off Westhill 60-58 in overtime.
Following Tuesday's games, the Darien boys and girls teams will be off for a week for the Christmas break.
