2. Darien boys basketball hosts rival New Canaan
Wins have been hard to come by this season for the New Canaan and Darien boys basketball teams, who are each off to 1-6 starts.
But one is guaranteed to pick up a second victory on Tuesday as the rivals square off in Darien (7 p.m.).
New Canaan almost picked up a win on Friday, but suffered a 53-51 setback to McMahon, which earned its first victory of the season after starting 0-6.
Darien's is coming off a 69-48 defeat to Bridgeport Central.
The only wins for New Canaan and Darien came against Stamford Academy in last month's La Vista tournament.
While the boys clash in Darien, the girls will meet in New Canaan, also at 7 p.m. They have had more success as the Rams are 5-3 and the Blue Wave 4-4.
New Canaan's Sarah Mannelly is coming off her best all-around game of the season, scoring 25 points in Friday's 66-47 win over McMahon. She also had nine assists, eight steals and six rebounds.
Darien snapped a two-game losing streak with a 68-26 victory over Bridgeport Central. Kate Bushell and Daly Naughton each scored 14 points for the Blue Wave.
3. Darien boys excel in indoor track qualifying
The Darien boys indoor track and field team earned a first-place in the 4x240 sprint relay during an FCIAC qualifying meet on Saturday against Bridgeport Central, Harding, New Canaan, Westhill and host Staples.
The Blue Wave also had second-place finishes in four other events and took four of the top five positions in the 1,600 meters.
Senior captains Corey Eppley, Matt Pik, Spencer McMullin and Harlan Smith comprised the 4x420 relay team and posted a winning time of 1:59.9.
Sophomore Nick Lombardo finished second in the high jump (6-0) and the long jump (18-8.75).
In addition, Pik placed second in the 600 (1:28.6) while the sprint relay ream of sophomore Brian Davey, Billy Siemers, Will Ardery and Bryan Previte finished second in 4:15. Davey also took third in the 1,000 meters (2:49.7).

4. Darien Piranhas set records
On Dec 16, qualifiers from the Darien YMCA Piranha swim team traveled to the TYR Capital Classic in Greensboro, N.C., for the 12th consecutive year. The meet showcased some of the fastest YMCA swimmers on the East Coast.
Top 10 championship finalists for the Piranhas were: Caroline Orem (400 IM, 200 back), Liza Bragg (50, 100 free, 100, 200 back, 200 IM, 100 fly) and Steven Grune (50 free).
Other finalists included: Jack Bair (200, 500 free, 200 back), James Baker (200 fly, 1650 free), Bragg (400 IM), Tyler Gould (50, 100, 200 free, 100 fly), Grune (100 fly, 200 fly, 100 free), Chris Janson (400 IM, 200 back), Caroline Kearney (100 breast), Orem (200 free, 200 breast, 100 back).
Chris Janson made his first YMCA national qualifying time standard in the 400 IM. Orem set two team records for the 15-18 and open girls division in the 400 IM, only to have Bragg break the records later that evening.
Bragg ended up establishing eight team records in the girls 15-18 and open division (100, 200 back, 200, 400 IM.) Her 100 backstroke record was one of the oldest team marks on the books, dating to 1995.
