His new book, Hoops in Connecticut: The Nutmeg State's Passion for Basketball, published by The History Press, will be available for purchase. A press release and a jpg of the cover are attached for your perusal.

The book is a compact history of basketball in the state of Connecticut, covering outstanding high school teams, college teams and the 33 state natives who have played in the NBA. There are interviews with many of the game's luminaries -- from Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Famer Calvin Murphy (Norwalk) to former NBA stars Charles Smith, Vin Baker, John Bagley, Wes Matthews and the late John Williamson, from former Harlem Globetrotter Alvin Clinkscales to Johnny Egan, Chris Smith, Chuck Aleksinas, Tony Hanson, Ed Goldstone and the inimitable Frank "Porky" Vieira.

Several coaches are featured: The late Fred Barakat of Fairfield University, Dave Bike of Sacred Heart, Dee Rowe, Joe Vancisin, Bill Detrick, Frank Crisafi and Harrison Taylor.

From an area standpoint, there is a strong emphasis on Fairfield University, Sacred Heart University; Roger Ludlowe High School's 1954-55 New England championship team, Bassick High of Bridgeport's undefeated 1988-89 state championship team, and the myriad athletes and coaches who emerged from the Bridgeport playgrounds -- Messrs. Vieira, Vancisin, Taylor, the two Smiths, Matthews, Walter Luckett, Clinkscales, Bagley, et al.

There are more than 90 images, including a color photo of UConn's 2010-11 NCAA championship team visiting President Obama at the White House.

2. Darien girls basketball falls

The undefeated Danbury girls basketball team was a bit too much for on Tuesday.

Rebecca Gartner scored 18 points and Casey Smith added 16 as the Hatters posted a 55-36 victory over the Blue Wave in Darien.

Gartner also had 10 and nine rebounds or Danbury (13-0, 11-0), which remained one game ahead of Trumbull in the battle for the top seed in next month's FCIAC playoffs.

Emily Stein scored 10 points and Meg Marren added nine for Darien, which dropped to 7-6, 6-5.

Danbury built a 13-7 halftime lead and extended it to 27-15 at the half. The Hatters then outscored the Blue Wave 28-21 in the second to remain the FCIAC's only unbeaten team.

2. FCIAC cheerleading championship set for Wednesday
