UPDATES

• Babe Ruth: The Darien 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars ended a title drought of more than 40 years on Sunday.

Darien defeated Stamford 10-2 Sunday at Darien High School to sweep the best-of-three final and win the town's first District One Babe Ruth championship since 1969.

The only previous Babe Ruth titles for Darien came in 1967, when the 13s captured the district crown, and two years later when the 15s won the district championship.

Darien won the series opener 4-3 on Saturday, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to break a tie.

Jake Frasca led off the inning with a single, moved to second on Jamie Schofield's groundout, went to third on a pass ball and scored on Craig Miller's game-winning single.

Frasca finished with two hits, Enzo Stefanoni singled, scored twice and walked twice and Miller added a single, sacrifice fly, and three RBI.

Stephen Barston pitched four innings, striking out two and scattering six hits. Jack O'Neill picked up the win in relief, tossing the final three innings and only giving up one hit.

Leading the offense on Sunday were Andrew Enzor (two hits and two walks), Schofield (single, triple and sac fly), Tyler Costantino (single, walk and two RBI), Brian Walsh (two singles and an RBI), and O'Neill (four walks).

Frasca started on the mound, yielding only one hit and striking out three in three innings.  Edward Gozdz then allowed only one hit over the next three frames to earn the win.  Walsh closed out the seventh with a pair of strikeouts.

Other contributing members of the team were Michael O'Malley, Drew Costantino and Danny O'Boyle. The squad is coached by Joe Marzano and Barry Schofield.

The Darien 13s will now move on to the Connecticut state tournament in Ridgefield beginning July 15.

• Little League: Darien American edged out Ridgefield National 11-10 Sunday to finish unbeaten in pool play (6-0) in the 12-year-old District One Little League tournament.

Darien American, the top seed in pool B, will take on pool A runner-up North Stamford in the semifinals on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Stamford Springdale.

Wilton, the runner-up in pool B, will face Stamford's National Lione, the top seed in pool A, in the other semifinal on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Springdale. The final is set for Sunday at 4 p.m. at Stamford's Scalzi Park.

Darien National lost to Norwalk 7-4 on Sunday to wrap up pool play with a 2-4 mark.

• Softball: Darien lost to Redding/Easton 9-8 Sunday in the finals in the District One 10-year-old softball tournament. In the 12-year-old sectionals, Darien fell to 0-3 following a 9-4 loss to Bristol on Sunday.

• Hockey: After three seasons in Ottawa, Darien native Ryan Shannon has a new address.

The 28-year-old Shannon, who won a Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007, has signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning worth $625,000.

After playing on a bad team in Ottawa last season — the Senators were 13th in the Eastern Conference with 74 points — Shannon is joining a contender.

Last season, the Lightning finished fifth in the East with 103 points and took the eventual Cup champion Boston Bruins to seven games in the Eastern Conference finals.

According to the Tampa Tribune, the Lightning was one of the teams the versatile Shannon was pursuing and he could battle for a top-six forward spot during training camp in September.

"The impression I got from playing against them and then watching them in the playoffs is like a boxer always hitting the body and then just pouncing on teams as the game went along," Shannon told the Tribune. "It's a winning culture and to be part of that, there really is nothing better in the league. I think it's a great fit the way they team plays.''

In five NHL seasons, Shannon, who was generally used as a third- or fourth-line center in Ottawa, has 31 goals and 87 points in 260 career games. Last season, the 5-9, 175-pound forward recorded career highs with 11 goals and 27 points.

In Tampa, he will be a teammate of Martin St. Louis, who works out with Shannon in the summer in Connecticut.

The Lightning also features high scoring Vincent LeCavalier and one of the game's top young stars in Steven Stamkos.
