Darien Scores and Standings, July 14

UPDATES

• Little League: The old adage is that good pitching will always beat good hitting, but North Stamford had both weapons on its side Wednesday. The team allowed just one hit while collecting 11 en route to an 8-1 win over previously unbeaten Darien American in the semifinals of the District One Little League tournament at Stamford Springdale. .

• American Legion: The Darien/New Canaan senior American Legion team kept its state tournament hopes alive with a 17-7 win over Ridgefield on Wednesday.

At 12-12, the needs to win two of its last three games to secure a postseason berth. It is back in action on Friday against first-place Greenwich at Greenwich's Havermayer Field (5:30 p.m.)

The Darien/New Canaan junior team kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a 4-2 win over Wilton on Tuesday, improving to 12-12.

The juniors need to win their final three games to earn a postseason berth. Their next game is Thursday against Ridgefield at the old Ridgefield High School (5:30 p.m.).

• Babe Ruth: Darien will face District Two representative Fairfield in the first round of the 13-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament on Saturday at Ridgefield's Cuiccoli Field at 3:30 p.m.

Fairfield lost to Norwalk in the District Two final but is still representing the district. Norwalk elected to skip the state tournament to prepare for the New England regionals, which it is hosting starting July 29.
