• Hockey: Longtime Trinity Catholic hockey coach Chris Gerwig has taken the vacant job at Darien High School, the Connecticut Post reported Thursday.

The Crusaders' coach for the past 11 years, Gerwig replaces Larry Vieira, who left DHS after leading the Blue Wave to a 10-9-1 record last season.

"I owe a lot to Trinity Catholic to be in this situation to get this job," Gerwig told the Post. "I'm thankful for all the opportunities they gave me. Sometimes in life you have to do something new."

• Little League: Darien National advanced to the finals of the 11-year-old District One baseball tournament with a 3-0 win over Ridgefield on Thursday.

Darien National will face Wilton, a 13-3 winner over Ridgefield in the other semifinal, in the final on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Stamford's Scalzi Park. The game will precede the 12-year-old final between National Lione and North Stamford.

• Babe Ruth: Darien will face District Two representative Fairfield in the first round of the 13-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament on Saturday at Ridgefield's Cuiccoli Field at 3:30 p.m.

If Darien wins, it will play in the winner's bracket semifinals on Sunday at 4 p.m.. If Darien loses, it will drop into the loser's bracket and play on Monday at 5 p.m.

Fairfield lost to Norwalk 10-0 in the District Two final but is still representing the district. Norwalk elected to skip the state tournament to prepare for the New England regionals, which it is hosting starting July 29.  

• American Legion: Needing to win two of its final three games to make the state tournament, the Darien/New Canaan senior American Legion team will be back in action against first-place Greenwich at Greenwich's Havermayer Field (5:30 p.m.).

Darien faces Bridgeport on Saturday at Darien High School at 10 a.m., then meets Stamford on Sunday at 10 a.m. at DHS.

The Darien/New Canaan junior team was eliminated from postseason cosideration following Thursday's 6-4 loss to Ridgefield.

Darien/New Canaan dropped to 12-13 with only two games remaining, and 15 wins is required to make the state tournament in the junior ranks.
