• Golf: Darien's Peter Ballo, who plays out of Woodway Country Club, had a rough day Wednesday at the New England Amateur at the Metacomet Country Club in East Providence, R.I.
Ballo posted rounds of 75 and 84 to finish tied for 36th with a 72-hole total of 300. Ballo began the day tied for 11th at 1 over 141, but he played the 36 holes on Wednesday in 19-over par.

• Babe Ruth Baseball: After winning the town's first district title since 1969, the Darien 13-year-old Babe Ruth team now finds itself one game away from the New England Regionals.
Darien rallied for a 4-3 victory over New Milford on Tuesday at Ridgefield's Ciucolli Field to advance to Thursday's state championship game.

After outscoring its first two opponents in the tournament by a combined margin of 25-1, Darien found itself trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth on Tuesday.
But Darien tied the game on Craig Miller's ground-rule double, then scored twice in the sixth on RBI hits by Andrew Enzor and Jamie Schofield.
Darien needs one win to advance to the New England Regionals, which will be hosted by Norwalk starting on July 29 at McMahon High School. The team that emerges from the losers' bracket must beat Darien twice to take the state crown.
