Darien will have to wait another day to win the town's first Babe Ruth state championship in more than 40 years.
In the 13-year-old state final on Thursday in Ridgefield, Darien was plagued by an inability to get a clutch hit and suffered a 5-2 loss to New Milford.

Since Darien was undefeated, however, it will get another shot as the teams will play a winner-take-all game on Friday at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the New England Regionals to be hosted by Norwalk.
On Thursday, Darien, whose last Babe Ruth state title came in 1969, stranded 15 runners in a seven-inning game.

In the top of the third, New Milford’s Tim Rehm led off with a single. After moving up on fielding miscues, he scored on Jackson Olson's single for a 1-0 lead.
Andrew Enzor started the bottom of the third with a single to center and stole second and third. Enzo Stefanoni then singled to tie the game.
Darien loaded the bases as Jake Fresca singled and John Schofield reached on an error. However, Craig Miller and Tyler Costantino struck as Darien missed a huge chance to gain the lead.
New Milford took the lead with two runs in fourth and tacked on two insurance markers in the seventh.
RIDING: Darien and New Canaan residents have pulled together to form a team that will compete in the sixth annual Connecticut Challenge, a charity bike race set for July 30 in Westport.
The team's co-captains are a pair of 12-year-olds: Luke Whittaker, who is a two-time cancer survivor, and Sammee Mazzone.
The Connecticut Challenge funds cancer survivorship programs across Connecticut for adults and children. All of the funds raised by Connecticut Challenge riders are spent on care for cancer survivors.
Participants can choose between 12-, 25-, 50-, 75- and 100-mile rides. More than 600 riders from 14 states are expected for this year's challenge.
