Darien Scores and Standings, June 29

Swimming: Jake Greene, a long-time member of the Darien YMCA Piranhas who is headed to Lehigh University in the fall, won the Open Water Madison Mile on Saturday at the Madison Surf Club.

This event is conducted as Connecticut Swimming's Open Water Championship and is the only open water race on the calendar in the state. Many of the Piranhas were swimming an open water race for the first time but still posted impressive performances.

Jack Bair was third in the 15-18 boys division while Amanda Bieler was third for the 13-14 girls, followed by Amelia Ornato and Natalie Grune, who were fourth and fifth, respectively. 

Other Piranhas who participated in the swim included Chris Janson, Gilmar Barrios, Cesar Pena, Hadley Merrill, Sam Schrenker, Lia Barsanti and Becca Maroney.

Golf: Peter Ballo of the Woodway Country Club tied for 16th Tuesday at the 56th Ike Championship in Bernardsville, N.J., with a score of 14-over par 224 (73-75-76).

Shorehaven's Tommy McDonagh, fresh off his victory  in the Connecticut Amateur Championship, won the tournament in a two-hole sudden death playoff with Joe Saladino of the Huntington Country Club. McDonagh posting a winning score of 1-over par 211 in the 54-hole event (71-68-72).

Cameron Wilson, also of Shorehaven, tied for third (72-69-72-213), making it a good day for the Norwalk country club, which won the team competition.

Among other locals, Curtis Loop of the Country Club of New Canaan finished fifth (71-73-71-215) and David Pastore of Griff Harris in Greenwich finished eighth (69-71-78-218).

Tennis: Darien's Caroline Dunleavy, the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 7 seed Semi Oloko of Norwood, Mass., 6-0, 6-3 on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the New England junior section championships at the Yale University courts.

Dunleavy will face No. 6 seed Mary Ann Rompf of Newport, R.I., in the semifinals on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.. The finals are Thursday at 9.

Little League: Darien American and Darien National begin pool play Wednesday in the District One Little League tournament. American opens with Federal (Stamford) at 5:45 p.m. at Frank Noto Field while National's first game is against Wilton at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Terry Field. Pool play continues through July 10.

In the 9-10 baseball division, Darien National is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Federal (12-2), Ridgefield National (6-2) and Weston (9-5) while Darien American has split its first two games against Ridgefield American (16-3 win) and Wilton (18-10 loss).

Darien American and National also have teams in the 10-11 District One tournament which begins this weekend.

In Little League Softball, Darien (one team)  has wons its first two games with victories over Wilton (11-0) and Redding/Easton (15-4).
