Darien Scores and Standings, Nov. 11

Patch's daily digest of Darien sports

UPDATES

• Girls soccer: Dillon Schoen scored the game's only goal late in the first half as the 17th-seeded Blue Wave defeated Fairfield Ludlowe 1-0 Thursday in the first round of the CIAC Class L state tournament.

Phoebe Taylor recorded four saves for Darien, which improved to 10-5-3. The win sets up a second-round meeting at top-seeded Glastonbury (13-0-2) on Saturday at Saturday at 2 p.m. The Tomahawks had a bye in the first round.

Fairfield Warde, which lost to Greenwich 1-0 in the FCIAC finals, concluded its season at 11-7-2.

A total of eight FCIAC teams advanced to the second round Thursday - Ridgefield, Greenwich, Staples, Westhill (which beat Danbury) and New Canaan in Class LL, Wilton in Class L and St. Joseph in Class M.

The only other team (other than Danbury) to lose on Thursday was Fairfield Ludlowe, which fell to defending Class LL state champion Shelton (2-0). In non head-to-head matchups, the FCIAC went 6-1.

• Boys soccer: After a surprising regular season, the Blue Wave earned a No. 5 seed in the Class L tournament and host No. 28 North Haven in the first round on Friday at 2 p.m.

If Darien wins, it could face archrival New Canaan, the defending Class L state champions, in the second round on Saturday. The Rams open with Lyman Hall and the winner takes on the Darien-North Haven survivor.

After going just 2-6-7 last season, the Blue Wave (12-3-3) finished third in the FCIAC this year under new coach Jon Bradley. They advanced to the semifinals of the FCIAC playoffs, losing to eventual champion Trumbull

• Field hockey: Darien begins a drive for a fifth consecutive Class M state title on Friday (2 p.m.) against No. 17 seed Pomperaug, which defeated No. 16 E.O. Smith 1-0 in qualifying game on Thursday.

If the Blue Wave (17-1-0-0) advance, they would host either either No. 8 Guilford or No. 9 East Lyme in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Darien figures to be highly motivated after getting upset by Staples 1-0 in the semifinals of the FCIAC playoffs. The loss snapped the Blue Wave's 93-game unbeaten streak, the third-longest in high school field hockey history.

• Football: Darien looks to improve to 8-1 on Saturday when the Blue Wave hosts winless Bassick (0-8) in a 1:30 p.m. game.

After falling at Staples 42-23 on Oct. 29, Darien rebounded to defeat Trinity Catholic 49-21 last week as Henry Baldwin threw four touchdown passes.

For the season, Baldwin has passed for nearly 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns with only seven interceptions.

A victory over the Lions Saturday will set up a showdown with New Canaan (7-1) when a berth in the state playoffs with be on the line for both teams.

Darien is eighth in this week's rankings while New Canaan slipped to seventh after last week's 36-29 loss to Stamford. Since each team now has one loss, it seems unlikely that both will get into the state playoffs.

• Girls volleyball: The Blue Wave, who have moved up a division to Class LL, begin their quest for a 10th state title in 11 years when they host either No. 17 seed Fairfield Ludlowe or No. 16 Mercy in the second round on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Darien earned the top seed and a first round bye after an 18-0 regular season, which was followed by its 10th consecutive FCIAC title. The Blue Wave defeated Staples 3-0 in the FCIAC final on Saturday to improve to 21-0 overall. All but two of Darien's matches this season have ended in sweeps.

If Darien advances, it would face either No. 8 seed Glastonbury or No. 9 South Windsor in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Last year, Darien lost to East Lyme 3-0 in the finals of the Class L tournament, ending its nine-year reign as state champions.
