The win puts the Blue Wave in the driver's seat to make the FCIAC playoffs as they only need to beat winless Bassick on Wednesday to clinch a spot.

Meg Marren scored 16 points and Kate Bushell added nine for the Blue Wave, who improved to 11-8 overall and 10-7 in the FCIAC.

A loss would have eliminated Darien from playoff contention, but the Blue Wave stayed alive by outscoring the Mustangs 17-10 in the fourth quarter after the contest was tied 32-32 after three periods.

Jamera Fountain and Tiara Fountain each scored 12 points for Warde, which trailed 26-21 at halftime and had three  players foul out.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 12-7 and 10-7, setting the stage for Wednesday's winner-take-all showdown against Stamford, which lost to St. Joseph 54-36 on Monday. The winner of the Stamford-Warde contest will clinch a playoff spot.

After Monday's action, Stamford, Darien, Warde and Staples, a 43-40 winner over Greenwich on Monday, are all tied at 10-7. Staples needs a win and a Darien loss, which seems unlikely against Bassick, to get in.

2. Darien boys fall to Warde

The Fairfield Warde boys basketball held Darien under 30 points Monday en route to an easy 47-27 victory over the Blue Wave.

Michael Wright scored 12 points and Sal Siciliano added 10 for the Mustangs, who improved to 10-7 overall and 8-7 in the FCIAC while staying in the thick of the playoff chase.

Warde put away the game in the first half, building a 30-8 lead at the intermission. The Mustangs held the Blue Wave to exactly four points in the first, third and fourth quarters.

In the third period, Warde gave up eight points, which matched Darien's first-half total.

Thomas MacLean scored 11 points to lead Darien, which dropped to 2-15 and 1-14.

3. Darien boys hockey faces rival New Canaan

The Darien boys hockey team puts its 11-game winning streak on the line Tuesday when it faces rival New Canaan at the Darien Ice Rink (4 p.m.).

Darien is coming off Saturday's 4-2 showdown victory over Ridgefield. That decision snapped the Tigers' 14-game winning streak and left Darien (12-3, 9-0) alone in first place in the FCIAC.

New Canaan (10-6-1, 6-3) is experiencing an up-and-down season and is tied with Trinity Catholic for fifth place in the FCIAC standings. Westhill (5-9-1, 5-3) is right behind the Rams.

Under the FCIAC's new playoff format, only the top six teams qualify for the tier one playoffs.

Darien is looking to complete a season sweep of New Canaan, having defeated the Rams 6-1 on Dec. 19. That was before the Blue Wave embarked on their winning streak as they lost to Hamden and West Haven to fall to 1-3.

New Canaan is coming off Friday's 4-1 win over Trumbull and has won two straight.  The Rams have another tough game at St. Joseph on Saturday before completing the regular season next Monday against Wilton.
