2. Darien, New Canaan hockey clash for spot in FCIAC finals
The always intense hockey rivalry between New Canaan and Darien figures to be turned up another notch on Wednesday when the teams clash for a berth in the FIAC's tier one playoff finals.
Faceoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford with No. 2 seed Ridgefield taking on St. Joseph in the second game of the semifinal doubleheader at 8 p.m.
New Canaan (13-7-1) enters the game off back-to-back blowouts against Wilton. The Rams essentially clinched a tier one playoff spot with a 7-1 win over the Warriors on Feb. 20, then routed Wilton again -- this time 9-2 -- in the first round on Saturday.
Darien (15-5), the top seed, earned a bye in the first round, as did Ridgefield (18-2), the No. 2 seed.
During the regular season, the Rams and Blue Wave split their two meets. Darien posted a 6-1 win over New Canaan on Dec. 19, which was before the Blue Wave embarked on an 11-game winning streak that the Rams halted with a 4-0 victory on Feb. 14.
Prior to that loss, Darien stopped Ridgefield's 14-game winnning streak with a 4-2 victory on Feb. 11 that enabled the Blue Wave to beat out the Tigers for the top seed.
Darien has been off since defeating South Windsor 4-1 in a non-conference game last Thursday.
