DARIEN, CT — The Town of Darien announced on Wednesday it is switching to a new emergency alert system.

Darien currently uses CodeRed for emergency alerts, which is an opt-in alert system used to notify residents with critical information in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures or other emergencies.

Effective July 1, CodRed will no longer be available. As a result, Darien will switch to a new opt-in emergency alert system provided by Everbridge: Alerts 06820.

"All residents are strongly encouraged to voluntarily sign up for Alerts 06820 to get notified about emergencies and other important community news," the Town of Darien Emergency Management said in an announcement. "This is the only official emergency alert system in town and the only way to be individually notified of local emergencies. Registrants are able to specify how to receive time-sensitive messages, such as calls to their home, cell or business phones, an email, or text messages, as well as what type of emergency alerts they would like to receive."

"The success of this service relies on you. Having your latest contact information is the only way to ensure that you are contacted in an emergency," Darien Emergency Management said in an announcement. "It is important to remember that this notification system is just one tool used to notify the public in the event of an emergency, and no one should rely on it exclusively for emergency information."

Residents who previously subscribed through CodeRed will need to re-register with Everbridge.
