Darien YMCA Gymnasts Tops at 2015 Northeast Regional Championships

Competing against nearly 1,100 gymnasts from more than 30 YMCAs at the 2015 YMCA Northeast Regional Gymnastics Championships, Darien gymnasts topped the podium in the Level 8 team competition and eleven gymnasts won individual All Around (AA) titles for their age group and level including Nadia Borja, Sofia DeStefano, Caterina Pye, Kate Wolters, Sofia Pye, Dillan Aysseh, Annsley Martin, Sam Aparicio, Perri Mirabile, Sam Gunn and Kelsey Fedorko.

The Champion Level 8 team swept the AA titles in all age groups. Annsley Martin took first on vault and AA with a 36.775 in the Junior (Jr)A age group, placed second on floor, third on bars and fourth on beam. Sam Aparicio was the champion on all events except floor where she placed second on the way to a tremendous first place 37.175 AA score in JrB. Perri Mirabile won the vault, floor and AA titles in the Senior (Sr) group and placed fifth on beam. Jessica Freiheit was second on bars and floor, third on vault and fourth AA. In the Masters group, Sam Gunn won the vault, floor and AA titles and placed second on bars and beam. Kajsa Lundeen was the beam champion, placed second on vault and AA and third on bars and floor.

Kelsey Fedorko, the sole competitor for Darien at Level 9, won vault, bars, floor and the AA title with 34.85 and placed second on beam.

Leading the Level 7 team to a second place finish were twins Aisling and Fiona Brock, who placed second and fourth AA in the Sr group. Aisling was also the vault and beam champion while Fiona placed second on vault, sixth on bars, fourth on beam and fifth on floor. In the Child (Ch) group, Juliana Jordao placed fourth on beam and AA and sixth on vault. Gianna Cardini was fourth on vault, third on beam, sixth on floor and fifth AA in the Jr group, while Kaitlyn Moussignac was the vault champ. In the Youth (Y) group, Nicole Carlo won the vault and beam titles and placed fourth AA while Allie Trotman was sixth on vault and fourth on bars.

Jane Ogden led the fourth place Level 6 team, taking first on floor and placing third on vault, fourth on bars and second on beam and AA in the JrB group. Sydney Steele placed sixth on bars, fifth on floor, third AA and second on vault and beam in the Ch group. Lana Schmidt was the beam champ in the YB group and also placed fifth on vault, sixth on bars and third AA while Tess Keating earned third on beam. Maeve DeGulis earned her meet high score on beam in JrA. In the Sr group, Emily Medwid hit her beam routine for third place and Sarah Petti took fifth on vault.

The Level 5 team also took fourth place, with Kate Wolters leading the way in the JrBB group, winning bars and floor on the way to the AA title, and finishing third on vault and beam. Leah Wall won the vault and floor titles in the JrBG group, placed sixth on bars and second on beam and AA. Tori Ware was the beam champ, placed fourth on floor and fifth on bars and AA while Paige Domenici was second on vault. In JrDB, Christina Pizzani placed fourth on vault and bars and sixth on beam. Holly McGoldrick took the beam and floor titles and placed second on vault, bars and AA in the JrDG group.

Sofia Pye won the floor and AA titles in the SrAG group and placed third on vault, bars and beam. Dillan Aysseh was champion on vault and AA in SrAB and second on bars, beam and floor while Lindsey Hall was the bars and floor champ, second AA and third on vault and beam. In the SrC group, Kerry McDermott was second on bars, fourth on beam, fifth on floor and vault and sixth AA. Sofia Fea was fourth on bars and vault in SrD.

Sofia DeStefano led the second place Level 4 team, topping the podium in vault, bars and beam on the way to winning the AA with a terrific 37.725 and placing second on floor in the Under 10 ChA group. Melina Cardini was fifth on floor and sixth on vault and beam in the ChB group while Anna Primmer earned her meet high score on floor. In the ChC group, Iris West won the vault title while Devan Grills placed fourth on beam.

The Pye twins, Gabriela and Caterina, both topped the podium in the ChD group, with Caterina winning bars, beam, floor and AA with 36.475 while Gabriela won vault, placed second on bars and AA and tied for third on floor with Emma Kelly. Kelly was also fourth on beam and fifth AA. Isabella DeStefano tied with Caterina for third on vault, placed fourth on bars, second on beam and floor and third AA. Audrey Ridder was fourth on vault.

In the Under 10 YA group, Jane Tortorella placed second on beam, third on floor and AA and tied Katelyn Secor for fifth on bars. Secor also earned fourth on vault and sixth on beam and AA. Megan Mitchell was third on vault, fourth on beam and floor and sixth AA in the YB group. Saskia Chermayeff was second on floor, Annie Bingle took fourth on vault and Treasa Brown earned her meet high score on bars.

Competing in the 11 and up Level 4 JrB group, Lucy Collins was the beam champ with 9.5, placed third on vault, second on floor, fifth on bars and fourth AA. In the YC group Emma Neaderland was fourth on beam, sixth AA and third on vault and floor while Alison Enters earned sixth on vault and fifth on beam. Maggie Russell earned her meet high score on vault in group YD. Dylan Ross took fourth on floor and fifth on vault in the JrC group while Melanie Vernal earned her meet high score on floor in JrA.

The youngest competitor for Darien, Macy Griffith, had a good day in the Level 3 ChA group, placing sixth on vault and beam, second on bars, fifth on floor and fourth AA. In the ChC group, Lauren Smith was fourth on bars, sixth on floor, fifth AA and tied with Alexia Bucheski for fifth on beam. Bucheski was also second on bars, fourth on floor and sixth AA while Julia Decsi was fourth on beam and sixth on vault. Nadia Borja took three titles in the YC group, winning vault with 9.75 and beam with 9.6 on the way to a stunning 38.40 for the AA title, as well as placing second on bars and floor.

In the Intermediate A group, Kyle Latimer was fifth on vault and sixth AA. Brooke Romano earned second on vault, fourth on beam, fifth on floor and sixth AA in the JrA group while Grace Nash was sixth on vault, fourth on bars and second on floor. Amelia Lancaster flipped to fourth place on vault, bars and floor in the JrB group. In JrC, Olivia Perkins won the bars title with 9.4, placed sixth on vault, fourth on beam and third AA while Kira McCreesh was the vault champ. Alexandra Decsi earned her meet high score on vault in JrD. In the SrB group, Alexandra Bowman won gold on floor, placed sixth on bars and vault and fourth on beam and AA.

The team will next compete in the YMCA National Championship Meet in Wichita, KS in June.
