DARIEN, CT — Scott Hapgood, the Darien resident charged in the killing of a hotel worker in Anguilla earlier this year, is back in the United States following a "Preliminary Inquiry" hearing last week in the Caribbean country.

The hearing was before the Magistrate to decide whether the prosecution has a prima facie case to go to trial, according to a spokesperson for Hapgood.

"The Magistrate held last week’s hearing in private; out of respect for the legal process in Anguilla, we cannot comment on what occurred behind closed doors," the spokesperson said in a statement.

Hapgood is facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the April killing of Kenny Mitchel at the Malliouhana hotel following an altercation. Hapgood maintains that he was acting in self-defense because Mitchel was trying to rob and harm his family.

He has traveled back and forth to Anguilla several times in recent weeks to meet the stipulation of his bail conditions, and the spokesperson said that he has satisfied "each and every condition without fail."
