DARIEN, CT — While sitting in an Anguilla jail last April facing a manslaughter charge, Darien resident Scott Hapgood considered committing suicide, he recently told the British newspaper The Sunday Times, writes the Darien Times.

Hapgood has refused to return to the Caribbean island — which is a British territory — in connection with the case since last fall, a decision he says was made because he believes the case was not being handled fairly by Anguillan authorities.

He eventually was able to make bail and was released, and he initially returned to the island multiple times to honor the legal process, but stopped in November.

Hapgood was charged with manslaughter in connection with the killing of hotel worker Kenny Mitchel. Hapgood and his family were on vacation, and he says Mitchel came to his family's room unexpected and then tried to rob them. The killing occurred as Hapgood says he acted in self-defense.

The current status of the case was not immediately available, though Hapgood has received verbal support from President Donald Trump and other national leaders.
