DARIEN, CT — Scott Hapgood, the Darien resident facing manslaughter charges in the Caribbean island of Anguilla, is scheduled to hold a press conference Monday with United States Sen. Richard Blumenthal, calling on Anguilla to provide safe passage to Hapgood for his next court hearing.

Joining Blumenthal and Hapgood outside of Darien Town Hall on the 28th will be his wife, Kallie Hapgood, and other state and local officials.

"Sen. Blumenthal plans to show his support for the Hapgoods and press Anguilla for safe passage for Scott at his November 11 hearing as well as more transparent proceedings," a spokesperson for Hapgood said in a statement.

Hapgood is scheduled to read a brief statement at the press conference but will not take questions due to the ongoing proceedings. Since the incident, Hapgood has had to travel to Anguilla numerous times to meet his court obligations, and his legal team has complained his safety has been at risk during those trips.

In a recent appearance on the Fox News program "Fox & Friends," Kallie Hapgood called on President Donald Trump to assist with the case, and in a Twitter post he wrote that he would look into it.

Scott Hapgood is accused of killing 27-year-old hotel worker Kenny Mitchel, who died following an altercation with Hapgood while he was on vacation with his family last April. The incident occurred in the family's hotel room with Hapgood's two young daughters present (his wife and young son were not in the room at the time).

He has steadfastly maintained that he only acted in self-defense after Mitchel tried to rob him.

A recent Medical Examiner's report, obtained by The New York Times, said that Mitchel had a lethal dose of cocaine in his system at the time, and that he died from that and not from Hapgood's actions.
