'Distraction Theft' Reported At Darien Stop & Shop: Police

Police said three suspects were involved in the theft of a woman's wallet from the grocery store on July 13.

DARIEN, CT — A woman's wallet was stolen at the Darien Stop & Shop on July 13 in what police are calling a "distraction theft" involving three suspects.

On that date shortly before 6:30 p.m., a Darien police officer responded to the Stop & Shop on Old Kings Highway North on a report of a larceny, police said.

"The victim reported that while shopping for groceries her wallet was stolen. The victim stated that she was approached by a female who needed help reading a label and also asked if the victim had glasses she could borrow," police said. "The victim unzipped her purse to retrieve her glasses and forgot to zip her purse back up. After helping the female read the label the victim continued to shop, and when she went to pay for her groceries at 6:15 p.m., she noticed her wallet was missing."

The victim called to cancel her credit cards, but was advised that two fraudulent attempts were made at Best Buy in Norwalk, police said.

"The surveillance footage shows two female and one male suspect working together in the store. The wallet is observed being stolen when the victim walks away from her cart to shop," police said. "The male suspect stands near the shopping cart while the female suspect that asked for help earlier takes the wallet from the purse."
