Duchess To Close Darien Location; Here's What's Taking Its Place

The building that currently houses Duchess won't stay vacant for long.

DARIEN, CT — After years in business at 306 Post Road in Darien, Duchess will close its doors.

But the building won't stay vacant for long, as Wonder, a unique food hall delivery chain, is expected to open later in 2026.

When reached by phone Friday, the manager of the Darien Duchess location told Patch the last day will be Feb. 1.

Duchess has been in business in Connecticut since 1956.

"For over sixty years, Duchess has proven that you do not need to sacrifice quality and freshness when choosing a quick-service restaurant," the restaurant's website says. "While other fast service restaurants offer only pre-cooked food from limited menus, we give our customers their choice of a wide variety of fresh food, cooked when ordered."

Besides Darien, there are other Duchess locations in Ansonia, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Milford, Monroe, Naugatuck, Norwalk, Orange, Shelton and Stratford.

Wonder partners with world-renowned chefs, such as Bobby Flay, Marcus Samuelsson and Jose Andres, along with well-known restaurants like DiFara Pizza out of Brooklyn, NY, and Tejas BBQ from Dallas, Texas, among others, to create menus and dishes spanning a variety of cuisines - all under one roof.

Wonder says it owns and operates every step of the experience – sourcing, prep, kitchen operations, and delivery. Each dish is made to order in a Wonder storefront and delivered fast and free.

Ordering is primary completed online, although customers can come into Wonder storefronts and order at kiosks.

There are currently 90-plus locations across New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland.

Wonder has been eyeing Darien for some time.

The brand previously applied for a special permit to open a location on the ground floor at 1897 Boston Post Road, but the application was withdrawn from consideration last May after residents spoke against the proposed location.

Last September, the Darien Planning & Zoning Commission approved Wonder's request for a restaurant tenant substitution at 306 Post Road by a 3-1 vote.

The Darien Architectural Review Board discussed Wonder signage during its Dec. 16, 2025 meeting, which can be viewed on DarienTV.

The board is scheduled to discuss a monument sign for Wonder at the site during its Jan. 20 meeting. Building and other permit applications for Wonder have also been submitted to the town.
