DUI Charge for Darien Man After Stony Brook Crash

After a pickup truck driven by Timothy Sargent was pulled out of Stony Brook near Old Kings Highway South in the wee hours of Sunday, Feb. 3, his medical records showed he was driving under the influence, police said.

Darien police charged a 22-year-old Brookside Drive man with driving while intoxicated five weeks after his pickup truck had to be hauled out of Stony Brook in the wee hours of a Sunday morning.

Timothy Sargent of 59 Brookside Dr. was driving the pickup on Old Kings Highway South near Glen Gorham Lane when, at about 1:50 a.m., it left the roadway and went down into the stream, police said. It later needed to be hauled out.

Police gave this account of the incident, investigation and arrest:

Sargent was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup west on Old Kings Highway South near Glen Gorham Lane when it crossed over the centerline of the road and struck the abutment of the bridge over Stony Brook.

The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into Stony Brook, where it became partly submerged on the eastern bank.

A police officer who spoke with Sargent smelled alcohol on him and saw that he seemed to be incoherent, had bloodshot eyes and was unsteady on his feet. He had injuries on his neck and around his face, so a Darien EMS-Post 53 ambulance took him to Stamford Hospital.

Police then obtained a search warrant for Sargent's medical records, which stated that his blood alcohol level was over the legal limit.

Police then applied for an arrest warrant charging Sargent with driving while under the influence of alcohol and failure to drive right.

Sargent was informed of the warrant after it was approved, and on Sunday, March 10, he turned himself in at police headquarters, posted a $250 bond and was released pending his scheduled court appearance on March 21 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
