DUI Charge For Woman Who Slams Car Into Curb In Darien: Police

The driver, a Norwalk resident, didn't remember hitting the curb, according to police.

DARIEN, CT — A 59-year-old Norwalk woman was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol on Sept. 26 after she allegedly slammed her car into a curb multiple times on Hoyt Street near Phillips Lane in Darien, according to police.

Eleanor Behringer, of Union Avenue, was apprehended by police just before 1 p.m. because her car could no longer move due to the damage.

"The vehicle, a white Honda Civic, was found pulled to the side of the road on Hoyt Street, near the intersection of Phillips Lane," wrote police in a statement. "When the officer approached the vehicle, it was immediately apparent that the vehicle had suffered heavy damage to the front passenger’s side tire and rim, rendering the vehicle inoperable. The driver of the vehicle, Eleanor Behringer, was still in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. When asked about the damage, she was unable to remember hitting anything or how the vehicle had become damaged. Behringer appeared confused, and had difficulty putting the vehicle in 'park,' and removing the keys. A witness described Behringer’s vehicle as swerving heavily and striking the curb several times."

Behringer failed Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and "officers noted that she was very unsteady on her feet."

At police headquarters, Behringer's blood alcohol content test registered a 0.0, but she also submitted to a urine test, the results of which will be studied by a state lab.
