Elderly Darien Woman Swindled Out Of $5,200: Darien Police
Her bank was able to stop a second suspicious transaction.
DARIEN, CT — An elderly Darien woman was ripped off for $5,200 when someone in New Jersey fraudulently cashed one of her checks, according to Darien police.
The theft was reported over the weekend by the victim's son after the woman's financial advisor discovered it. Police said the check had been cashed on April 9.
"The victim confirmed that she had not written a check from the account to anyone," wrote Darien police in a statement. "A second check was attempted on April 11th, 2019 but the bank found it suspicious and denied the transaction. After being given the information on the two fraudulent checks, the complainant's mother confirmed that those two checks had been removed from the checkbook."

Recently, the victim had employed an unnamed company which provides visiting aides, and police said the son speculated that possibly one of the many individuals who have been in the woman's home might have taken the checks.
The recipient names on both checks were unknown to the victim, police said, and they did not match the names of any of the visiting aides.
