HARTFORD, CT — One thing seems for certain when the state of Connecticut finally adopts a budget this year – it will cost more to smoke a cigarette. The latest budget proposal, this one agreed to by both House and Senate leaders, calls for a 45 cents a pack increase from $3.90 to $4.35 on cigarettes.
While Democrats, Republicans and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy have all had different budget proposals and have had different plans to try and raise funds to offset the state’s bulging multi-billion dollar budget, deficit, each and every budget plan proposed has the 45 cent a pack cigarette tax increase included.

Smokers may not like the upcoming tax hike, which will push the average cost of a pack of cigarettes to close to $10 a pack, but at least they can be thankful they’re not smokers in New York City.
There, a law was signed pushing the price of a pack of cigarettes to a minimum of $13, as of next June 1st.
