Jake’s Place: Tasty Fare, Friendly Service

Eatery serves breakfast and lunch at the corner of Ledge Road and Noroton Avenue.

Every day I drive by Jake's Place. And every day the parking lot is filled with cars, trucks, motorcycles and a constant stream of customers coming and going. Whether it's 7 a.m. or 2 p.m., Jake's Place is always hoppin'.

So, what's the big deal with this little unassuming little breakfast and lunch eatery?

It starts with Jake's owner, longtime restaurateur Jeff Schoenfeld, who bought this already existing diner in 1996.

Looking for a more regular schedule, Jeff created a menu, concept and hours he could live with. Jake's Place became an instant neighborhood spot for a quick bite, a relaxing coffee respite and a smile to send you on your way.

The space is modest, with six stools for counter seating and a few scattered deuces and four-tops. The take-out business at Jake's Place is crazy busy.

Morning Fuel

Bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches fly out the door every morning. There's also a fabulous selection of omelets filled with everything from cheese and veggies to ham and bacon. There's oatmeal with fresh fruit too.

But for me, buttery-syrupy French toast and sausage with my cup of coffee is the way to start the day!

Midday Meals

I popped in for lunch and met Jeff—and instantly had a crush on him. He obviously loves what he does, and it's obvious that his customers love what he does too.

You'll find a wonderful mix of folks hanging out at Jake's place at any given time. On weekends the place is home to local friends and families with children in tow. The walls are adorned with local fire and police station badges, holiday cards with the kids' pictures, and a sea of business cards promoting area vendors.

I smelled charbroiled burgers the moment I stepped out of my car, so a taste for something warm and comforting was the only way to go.

The lunch menu carries lunch counter favorites, such as cheese burgers and fries, BLT sandwiches, grilled cheese, onion rings, and a cheesesteak sandwich with peppers, onions, and even chili.

I went for the Catalina Chicken Sandwich of grilled chicken breast, thin slices of tart green apples and melted brie on hearty bread, which was toasted on the griddle. This more than ample, flavorful (and one could even say "healthful") sandwich creation is priced at a generous $6.25.

Served with a large, halved pickle and something Jeff calls his "special" dressing (a slightly sweet and creamy Italian dressing), it was a perfect lunch.

Catering and More

Cold cut sandwiches are available, as are salad platters filled with all things green, served with tuna, chicken, and egg salad.

Catering is quite popular too and Jeff seems to enjoy preparing Italian food, as seen in the day's specials of pasta with broccoli rabe, chicken marsala, and eggplant parm.

Jeff deserves his success, and Darien deserves a place like Jake's Place.
