I went to my first Darien Board of Education meeting this past January because I was upset — not just about another round of proposed budget cuts, but about what they said about our town’s priorities. Like many parents, I worried about what less funding would mean for our children’s classrooms, teachers, and the programs that make learning joyful and deliver excellence.

The truth is, the ongoing tug-of-war between the Board of Education and the Board of Finance has already taken a toll. This year alone, 126 students withdrew from Darien’s public schools — the highest number on record — a clear sign that confidence in our district is starting to erode. It’s a slippery slope, and the “Darien advantage” so many of us moved here for is beginning to fade. We need leaders who will not only stop the slide but rebuild trust and restore the high standards that define this community.

At that meeting, one board member stood out to me. She was measured, thoughtful, and focused on what mattered most: our kids. She also understands that fiscal discipline and educational ambition can — and must — coexist, and that we can be responsible with our resources without shortchanging our kids. Her decisions are rooted in data, not politics, and her emphasis on clarity, measurable progress, and open communication is exactly what will help the Board of Education rebuild its credibility and keep our schools strong.

Talk to any teacher in Darien, and you’ll hear the same thing: they’re exhausted. After years of budget uncertainty and shifting priorities, morale is low. One teacher even told me, “This is the most morale-killing year in 16 years.” That’s not a staffing problem — it’s a leadership problem. Kadi brings conviction to every discussion, always standing up for our teachers, our classrooms, and the students they serve.

As we head to the polls, it’s worth remembering that this election isn’t just about one seat on the Board of Education. It’s about the kind of town we want to be. Do we want leaders who quietly accept limits set by others, or leaders who have the courage to define what our students truly need and stand by it?
