DARIEN, CT — A Lyft driver was stabbed several times in Darien on Monday night by a customer in what police are calling a random attack.

On June 27 around 10:37 p.m., the Darien Police Department responded to a report of a single-car accident in the area of West Avenue and Holmes Avenue.

While going to the scene, police were notified that a Lyft driver had been stabbed and a suspect fled the area with the driver's cell phone, Sgt. Dan Skoumbros said in a news release Thursday.

According to police, the driver said he picked up a customer in Stamford, and while en-rote to a destination in Norwalk, he was stabbed after entering Darien.

The driver told police he intentionally crashed his car into a tree on West Avenue to stop the attack, police said.

The driver was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, Skoumbros noted.

West Avenue in the area of Woodland Park was closed Monday night as police conducted an investigation. The Stamford Police Department and their K-9 unit helped with a search, but the suspect wasn't found.

"There appears to be no nexus to Darien other than the travel route taken through Darien," Skoumbros said. "This assault is believed to be random and no other information is being released at this time as this is an ongoing investigation."

Anyone with more information on the incident is asked to call the DPD detective bureau at 203-662-5330.
