Major Storm Update: 'Big Nor'easter' Expected to Impact Connecticut for Days

Connecticut meteorologists and the National Weather Service provide new details and updates about the Nor'easter and its expected impact.

All we know for certain right now is that a powerful Nor’easter is expected to impact Connecticut beginning Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning, but the exact track is still uncertain, which could still change the expected impacts to the state.

As of midday Saturday, Connecticut meteorologists caution that winds are expected to begin to gust Sunday afternoon and evening and really pick up on Monday, especially in southern Connecticut and along the immediate coast. The heaviest rain is forecast Monday mid morning through Monday evening and there could be some isolated power outages on Monday and there are flooding concerns at the coast.

Connecticut, which is still running a serious drought deficit, is expected to pick up an inch or two of rain by Tuesday morning. This still appears to be a largely rain and wind storm though some ice in northern Connecticut is still possible.

For areas along the immediate Connecticut coast a “High Wind Watch” has just been issued for winds gusting 30-40 mph and possibly up to 60 mph at times. The worst of the wind gusts is expected Monday mid morning through Monday evening, the National Weather Service states.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for all of southern Connecticut for strong winds and the possibility of moderate coastal flooding at the shore.

In Hartford and Tolland counties, the winds are expected to be less of a concern but still gusting up to 30 mph at times, and here there may be some snow and ice mixing in with the rain early Monday morning before changing over to plain rain. The exact track of the storm, which is still uncertain, will determine how much snow and ice mixes in, if any, in northern Connecticut.

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Kevin Arnone detailed the impacts the Nor’easter is expected to have on Connecticut in a Saturday post on the WTNH News 8 website. Concerning winds, it begins to gust around 20-30 mph Sunday afternoon/evening and could increase up to 50-60 mph Monday afternoon and evening especially along the coast, and then it diminishes to 25 mph on Tuesday, he wrote.

Arnone predicts that some power outages are likely along with coastal flooding concerns during times of high tide Monday morning and evening.

As for rain the entire state is predicted to receive an inch or two, he wrote. The heaviest period of rain is expected between late Monday morning and Monday evening, according to Arnone. The commute home from work Monday won’t be fun.

If you like snow, well that is largely confined to the Northwest hills and there it may even be too warm too, Arnone said.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan wrote Saturday that, “A wintry mix on Monday flips over to a wind driven rain. A high wind watch has been issued for the shoreline. This will be a big nor'easter and there's still some question as to the exact track which will make a big difference as to the strength of the wind. Stay tuned!

Enjoy today’s weather, sunny and temps into the mid 50s. Also no significant snow chances through at least next Friday.
