Man Accused Of Cashing Counterfeit Check Arrested: Darien Police

Police said a man cashed a fraudulent check for over $2,000 and tried to withdraw $4,200 at two banks in Darien last fall.

DARIEN, CT — A man accused of cashing a counterfeit check in Darien last fall was arrested last week, according to police.

David McMillian was extradited from Rikers Island in New York City to Darien where he was charged with third-degree larceny, criminal attempt at third-degree larceny, second-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, criminal attempt at criminal impersonation, and third-degree forgery.

On Nov. 14, 2024, Darien detectives were contacted by the Financial Crimes Department at M&T Bank regarding an identity theft and larceny that occurred at two separate bank locations in Darien, police said in a crime summary report.

According to police, on Oct. 25, 2024, McMillian posed as a Norwalk resident and used a fraudulent Connecticut driver's license to cash a counterfeit check for $2,375 at the Noroton Heights branch.

Later on, police said, McMillian tried to withdraw an additional $4,200 at a second Darien branch on Old Kings Highway, but was unsuccessful.

"The investigation linked McMillian to similar crimes in North Carolina and Westport, CT, through law enforcement bulletins," police said. "McMillian, who has an extensive criminal history spanning multiple states, was positively identified by officers in White Plains, NY, where he was recently arrested for possession of a forged instrument."

McMillian was unable to post a court-set bond of $75,000 in Darien, police said.
