Man Charged In Connection To Darien Gas Station Burglary: Police

The owner of the Mobil gas station on Noroton Avenue reported a burglary on Aug. 8, 2022, police said.

DARIEN, CT — A 33-year-old man has been charged in connection with a burglary at a Darien gas station which occurred in August 2022, according to the Darien Police Department.

Rickford Vyphuis, 33, of St. Albans in Queens, N.Y., was taken into custody on Jan. 24 by Darien detectives at the Westchester County Department of Corrections on a warrant that charges him with third-degree burglary and fifth-degree larceny.

Police said that on Aug. 8, 2022, the owner of the Mobil gas station on Noroton Avenue reported a burglary.

"The suspects entered a broken window and stole a customer’svehicle that was left in the parking lot. Several other customer keys were also stolen from the gas station," police said in a news release. "

Darien detectives found that a similar incident occurred in Westport and Mamaroneck, N.Y., on the same evening.

Mamaroneck police made an arrest in their burglary case and provided information to Darien authorities, police said. Detectives were then able to match photos from the arrest to surveillance footage from the gas station.

Cell phone data from the Westport Police Department showed that Vyphuis was at the scene of the Darien burglary, police said. An arrest warrant was granted with a court-set bond $50,000 bond.

Vyphuis was released on his bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 6, police said.
