Man Charged With Credit Card Theft: Darien Police

DARIEN, CT — A 32-year-old man wanted in connection with an incident of credit card theft from 2020 was arrested on April 6, according to the Darien Police Department.

Darien detectives went to Rikers Island last week to take custody of Catalin Vasile, of Forestville, Md., on two arrest warrants.

The warrants charged Vasile with criminal attempt at third-degree larceny; credit card theft; payment card theft; and first-degree failure to appear, police said in a news release.

On March 11, 2020, a man told police his credit cards and debit card were stolen from his locker at the Darien YMCA.

The man said that shortly after leaving the YMCA, he started receiving fraudulent alerts for his bank cards, police noted, adding that the cards were used at Best Buy in Norwalk, and a purchase was attempted at Target in Stamford.

A detective was able to use video surveillance from several locations to identify Vasile since he was arrested a short time later in Greenwich for a similar incident, police said.

An arrest warrant for Vasile was granted on Dec. 16, 2020, with a court-set bond of $100,000.

Vasile is scheduled to appear in court on April 17.
