Michael Borecki wins National History Bee Connecticut State Championship

National History Bee

Michael Borecki won the National History Bee Connecticut State Championship JV level for the second year in a row at Newtown High School on February 28. Mike also placed second in the concurrently run National History Bowl Connecticut State Championship varsity level as an unaffiliated one-man team since Darien High School does not participate in the National History Bee & Bowl. The winning team was from Greens Farms Academy. Last year, Mike and two DHS classmates entered the Bowl competition as an unaffiliated team and won at the varsity level while they were all freshmen.

This year, the final round of the Bee was between Mike and fellow Darien resident Tommy Paul, an old teammate of Mike’s from the Middlesex Middle School Quiz Bowl team that won a national championship in 2013.

Mike is only the second student (and first at the JV level) to score a 15-40 in a History Bee’s preliminary rounds during the current school year. The 15 represents a single round perfect score achieved by buzzing in and correctly answering the first 8 questions in a row before any opponent answers a question. The 40 represents the total score after the three preliminary rounds where 45 would be a perfect score.

Mike plans to attend the National Championship event in Arlington, Virginia, in April.
