Parents React to Convicted Child Rapist Being Found in Darien Park

The Idaho man admitted to police that he was attempting to escape to Canada, police said.

DARIEN, CT—Parents were generally surprised to find that a convicted child rapist was found sleeping in Cherry Lawn Park Tuesday.

The park is generally known for its safe and family-friendly nature, according to the Stamford Advocate. Several parents told the Advocate they frequent the park with children and it's regarded as being very safe and clean.

Brian Cook, 35, of Idaho was arrested after police received a report of a man sleeping in the woods. It was learned he was on parole for a criminal charge involving the rape of a child under one-year-old.

He later admitted to trying to escape to Canada, according to police.

He is scheduled to be picked up by Idaho officials later this month and will likely be in jail until March 2031, according to the Advocate. He pleaded guilty to some of the criminal charges Wednesday.

He was charged with interfering with police, two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon, violation of a town ordinance and fugitive from justice.

He was held on a $300,000 bond and is currently incarcerated and awaiting extradition to Idaho.
