DARIEN, CT — Darien police are investigating an incident that occurred at Trader Joe's in which a woman reported being a victim of a distraction theft that resulted in large ATM withdrawals against her account.

On Nov. 14 shortly after 1 p.m., a woman reported to police that while she was checking out at Trader Joe's on the Post Road, she noticed a man and woman directly behind her, police said in a news release.

The reporting party paid for her grocery items with her debit card and put her code into the machine.

"When she left the store the same female that was behind her in the store approached her holding up money in her hand with a receipt," police said. "The female told the victim that she had left her money. The victim stated that the male appeared and then stated that it was their money and he had the receipt. The male and female then left without any other interaction."

The reporting party said when she got home she received a text from her bank that said an ATM withdrawal was denied due to the maximum per day limit being reached, police said. The reporting party went to a local bank branch and was told that two large withdrawals were made at a branch in Stamford.
