CT Weather: Heavy Snow Forecast Friday Night, Motorists Urged To Stay Off The Roads

Heavy snow is forecast for Connecticut. Here are the latest snow accumulation estimates, which keep rising.

Most of Connecticut will receive more than six inches of snow from a strong but very quick-moving winter storm.

The heavy snow is forecast from 6 p.m. until midnight, and Gov. Ned Lamont has urged motorists to stay off the roads Friday night, if possible. Snowfall rates of an inch or two an hour are possible, forecasters say.

The snow should be all over early Saturday.

Here are the latest updates from the National Weather Service concerning the snowstorm:


Fairfield/New Haven counties

A winter storm warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday. "Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 9 inches."

"Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute.

"ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The period of heaviest snowfall (1-2"/hr) will occur between 6pm and midnight, making travel very difficult."


Middlesex/New London counties

A winter storm warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday. "Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches."

Hartford County

A winter storm warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. "Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches."


Tolland/Windham counties

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. "Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 6 inches."


Litchfield County

A winter storm warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.

"Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches."

"Moderate to heavy snow will develop early this evening and will continue overnight, gradually decreasing in intensity after midnight. Snowfall rates of one to two inches an hour will be possible at times before midnight. The snow will taper off Saturday morning to scattered snow showers and flurries."
