DARIEN, CT — A sewer line break at Weed Beach was repaired early Monday morning, according to First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky, but not before an estimated 100,000 gallons of sewage leaked out.

Zagrodzky said in an update late Monday afternoon on Instagram that "nearly all" of the sewage material was removed by vacuum trucks in a containment area work crews created.

As far as the town can tell, Zagrodzky said, there has been no flowage into residential areas or nearby Long Island Sound.

"Reporting to DEEP and other regulators is in progress," Zagrodzky wrote in the update.

Some cleanup work still needs to be done; residents are being asked to stay away from the affected area.

In a previous update, Zagrodzky said about two-thirds of the town's sewage flows through the line on its way to Stamford treatment centers.

The sewer line break was first reported Sunday afternoon underneath the roadway just past the gatehouse on the left side. Public works personnel and contractors from A.J. Penna & Son responded.

The break was repaired at 2:30 a.m., Zagrodzky said, and site restoration continued for several hours.

Zagrodzky thanked Darien Director of Public Works Ed Gentile, DPW, A.J. Penna and Son, One Vac Sewer & Drain and McVac Environmental.

"Fantastic work!" Zagrodzky added.
