Snow Plow Driver Hit With Breach Of Peace Charge In Darien: PD

The suspect, from Norwalk, claimed he was joking around.

DARIEN, CT — A Norwalk snow plow driver, who told police he was joking around, dangled a heavy plow above a car and destroyed a Darien Fire Department bench by dumping snow on it on Jan. 4. The antics led to his arrest on a charge of breach of peace, according to Darien police.

Gregory J. Twardy, 49, of West Norwalk Road, was arrested at his home following the incident, which occurred in the rear parking lot of the fire department's Post Road station in front of several firefighters who provided written statements.

Twardy had plowed the lot earlier in the day but returned that evening and began beeping his horn.

"Through the firehouse window, the complainant then observed Twardy destroy a wooden guard rail, that fire department uses as a bench, by dropping his snow plow on it," wrote Darien police in a statement. "The complainant stated that Twardy then drove across the lot and lifted the plow and dangled it from chains over the complainant’s vehicle. The complainant then exited the fire house to confront Twardy who responded 'I thought that would get your attention.' Twardy then left the scene and no damage was caused to the vehicle. Several other members of the fire department witnessed the incident and provided written statements detailing what happened. Fire Department Officials did not wish to press charges against Twardy for the damaged property."

Twardy claimed that he did not realize he that had damaged the bench with his plow, and added that the complainant, whose car he dangled the plow, "knows" him and that he was only joking.
