Special Weather Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued for Connecticut

​Parts of Connecticut received a Special Weather Statement tonight and parts are under a Hazardous Weather Outlook for later this week.

The National Weather Service has issued a “Special Weather Statement” for all of southern Connecticut for tonight as temperatures are expected to quickly drop and any snow that melted this afternoon will freeze and could lead to slippery conditions.

The “Special Weather Statement” hasn’t been issued for Hartford or Tolland counties for tonight but the National Weather Service has issued a “Hazardous Weather Outlook” for some significant icing potential Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

The Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service for southern Connecticut states:

“Patchy black ice develops tonight into early Monday. Snow has melted and with temperatures tonight into early Monday expected to fall below freezing across the entire region. The residual moisture will refreeze...These patches of black ice will develop tonight into early Monday...creating slippery conditions on surfaces. When traveling proceed with extra caution and travel more slowly.”

The Hazardous Weather Outlook for Hartford and Tolland counties states:

“Late Tuesday into Wednesday...potential for a significant icing event of sleet and/or freezing rain. Confidence is highest across the interior...especially the high terrain over northern and western Massachusetts and Connecticut,” the weather service states.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan wrote, “Gross. Probably not much snow on Tuesday but some of our computer models are showing an extended period of freezing rain on Tuesday. Things could get real icy by afternoon and evening especially north and west of I-84.”

Sunny, high temps in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. It feels colder with the wind chill factor. Temps will only drop to around 30 degrees at night.
