Stamford Juveniles Broke into Cars in Darien: Cops

Five teens were arrested early Saturday, and none of the vehicles were locked.

Darien, CT - Five juveniles from Stamford were arrested early Saturday for allegedly stealing two bicycles and breaking into 11 unlocked cars on Anthony Lane, Hollow Tree Ridge Road and Glenwood Road, according to Darien police.

The five were spotted by a resident of Anthony Lane at about 5:30 a.m. as they were allegedly breaking into cars in the neighborhood.

"Several officers responded to the area and located a group of five (5) male subjects who matched the description provided by the complainant, walking southbound on Hillside Avenue," police wrote in a statement. "The five subjects, who were all determined to be between 15 and 17 years old, claimed they were coming from a party nearby. While the five juveniles were being detained, the complainant responded to the scene and positively identified them as being the subjects he observed walking away from a vehicle which had its alarm activated in a nearby Anthony Lane driveway."

An investigation determined that the group allegedly was responsible for 11 vehicle burglaries on the roads mentioned above, and the theft of two bicycles. Police recovered several items from the vehicles from the juveniles' possession.

Additionally, Stamford police were notified of the car burglaries due to the close proximity to the city line, and they report that "numerous similar incidents have taken place in their jurisdiction" nearby, too.

"This investigation is ongoing," said Darien police.

All five juveniles, one 15-year-old, three 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old, were charged with two counts of Burglary 3rd Degree and Conspiracy to Burglary 3rd Degree. The owner of the two stolen bicycles declined to press charges, police said.

The five were released to their parents, and they are all scheduled to appear in Stamford Court of Juvenile Matters on June 28.

"Residents are reminded to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight," police added. "All eleven car burglaries that took place in this incident were vehicles that were unlocked. In less than two months, over twenty (20) overnight burglaries of unlocked vehicles have occurred in Darien."
