You won't believe the alleged excuse the suspect used to explain the assault.

DARIEN, CT — A 26-year-old Stamford man was charged with third-degree assault on Nov. 14 after he allegedly kicked a United States Postal mail carrier in the face when the victim tried to deliver a package on Hecker Avenue in Darien, according to Darien police. The attack occurred at about 6 p.m.

"The postal employee stated that approximately 10 minutes earlier he was attempting to deliver a package to 90 Hecker Avenue," wrote police in a statement. "As he walked up the driveway, a white male approached him and forcefully demanded him to identify himself. Before [the mail carrier] could respond, the male kicked him in the face causing him to fall to the ground. While on the ground, [the victim] identified himself as the mailman, at which time the male stated 'I’m sorry.' Injures to [the mail carrier’s] face were visible to officers. POST 53 responded to the Post Office to provide medical attention. Officers noted that [mail carrier] was wearing a dark blue postal uniform, with USPS branding on the jacket and hat."

Darien police went to the Hecker Avenue address and found the alleged attacker, who was identified as Michael Haggerty, of Cummings Avenue.
