Thieves Try To Break Into Darien Jewelry Store By Cutting Power
The incident started when the store's alarm system was activated multiple times one evening earlier this month.
DARIEN, CT — Darien police detectives are investigating an attempted burglary at David Harvey Jewelers on the Post Road, in which thieves tried to break into the business by cutting off its power, according to authorities.
The incident was reported on the morning of Aug. 11, after the store's alarm system was activated several times the night before when the business appeared to lose power. Police officers checked on the store after each alarm activation and found that the premises had not been breached.
According to police, the owner reported contacted Eversource about the power outage. However, the utility company told him that there was power to the building, and that there must have been an issue at the store as it was the only business to lose power in the building.

The owner then contacted an electrician to determine the cause of the electrical issue, only to discover that "the exterior breaker had been deliberately turned off only to David Harvey, as the building has six breakers for the businesses in the building," according to police.
"The locking mechanism to the breaker had been damaged in order to gain access," police said in a statement. "The owner of the jewelry store informed officers of a burglary trend that he had been advised of by an industry group. The incidents were described as a suspect cutting power to the business, allowing the response by police and employees, and then perpetrating a burglary once everyone departs."

Detectives reviewed the company’s surveillance footage around the time of the alarms, and it showed two men in the area each time, according to police.
"Further, a review of footage from neighboring businesses shows one of the males and a female walking in the area earlier in the day."
The case remains under investigation.
