Kids around Darien have been hunting for Waldo, the star character of the long-running series of children's game books, in stores around Darien for the past few weeks.
The hunt through Darien stores, organized by Barrett Bookstore, is the local version of a campaign started by the books' publisher, Candlewick Press, and the American Booksellers Association. A total of 265 independent book stores across the country are participating.
The game, which is free, works by finding a cutout figure of Waldo in each of 10 or 20 stores. Each time one is found, the child gets a stamp on his "passport" (available at Barrett Bookstore).
Kids with 10 stamps can get an "I found Waldo" sticker at Barrett. Kids with 20 can be entered in a drawing for various prizes, including a set of six Waldo books. They can also attend a party and the prize drawing at Barrett on Wednesday, July 31, at 4 p.m. (You must be present to win).
"Some of the merchants have been really into it," said Sheila Daley, owner of Barrett. "They change the location of Waldo in their stores."
Barrett's Facebook page has additional details and updates on the contest/game.
