Woman Stole Bank Card From Customer At Stop & Shop: Darien Police

The victim told police the woman "lunged" at her in the Stop & Shop parking lot and rummaged through her wallet, police said.

DARIEN, CT — Darien police are investigating an odd occurrence between a shopper and an unknown woman at Stop & Shop which led to large unwarranted cash withdrawals at a local bank and ATM.

Around 2:30 p.m., on March 3, a woman met with Darien police at headquarters to report a larceny that occurred about 15 minutes earlier at the Stop & Shop located at 25 Old Kings Highway North.

The reporting party told police she was in the self-checkout line at the grocery store that afternoon when a woman, who was standing "very close" to her, pointed to a $20 bill on the ground and told her it had fallen out of her purse, police said.

"The victim stated that she didn’t think the bill was hers, but she put the bill in her pocket," police said, adding that the woman walked away.

As the reporting party was walking to her car, the same woman approached her and began yelling at her that she took her $20, police said. The reporting party told police the woman "lunged" at her purse and then began rummaging through her wallet. The reporting party pushed the woman away from her, police said.

"The victim stated that she went to another store and then noticed her bank card was no longer in her purse. The victim stated that she contacted her bank and was advised that a large cash withdrawal was just made at a bank in Darien and an ATM withdrawal just occurred in Port Chester, N.Y.," police said.

Police did not say how much money was withdrawn.

Sgt. Dan Skoumbros of the Darien Police Department said investigators are working to get surveillance footage from Stop & Shop and video at the bank/ATM.
