Would-Be Distraction Burglars Target Elderly Darien Couple

A grandmother and her grandson realized something wasn't right and got the men to leave the house, police said.

A Darien couple and their grandson realized something wasn’t right when two men pretending to be water company technicians entered their home.

One male suspect approached the male Hollow Tree Ridge Road resident in his backyard on July 16 and said, “Hi pops, where is mom,” police said.

The man was thrown off guard and said she was inside. The man entered the house and said he was with the water company and had to check the water pressure and cleanliness of the water, police said. He went ot the basement and turned on a sink.

A second suspect entered the house and said he too was with the water company.

The first suspect entered the upstairs kitchen area and asked the 15-year-old grandson some generic questions and turned on the kitchen sink. The grandmother was also present.

The suspect ran upstairs and turned on two faucets quickly.

Both the grandmother and grandson realized something odd was occuring and asked the first suspect to immediatly leave the house.

The suspect ran down to retrieve his co-conspirator and they ran out of the door.

A third suspect was spotted on the side of the house and fled as well, police said.

Victims weren’t sure of what direction the burglars fled.

The first suspect was described as a 5’9’’ Hispanic man with a slim build. He was in his 20’s.

Second suspect was described as a Hispanic heavy-set man in his 30’s. He was 5’7’’ and had a goatee.

The third suspect was described as a short white male who was wearing a blue plaid shirt.
