You're Not Properly Disposing Of Your Recyclables, Darien

Staff at the town's Recycling Center are taking note.

DARIEN, CT — Even though lots of Darienites make a point to separate your recyclable items from the regular trash (good for you!), many of you still are not discarding them in the proper fashion, according to town officials.

"As clearly stated on the sign at the drop-off, plastic bags are not permitted in single stream!" the Darien Recycling Center wrote on Twitter this week, accompanied by a photo of plastic bags in the bin.

Public Director Edward Gentile Jr. tells Patch that despite regular requests that residents empty their recyclables out of their plastic bags, the practice persists.

"Plastic bags are always a problem…some folks use them to hold the recycled material," Gentile said Wednesday. "We have posted signs at the transfer station regarding this."

While the town's residential food scrap recycling program was launched this fall and might cause some confusion, the single stream recycling program in Darien is a few years old. So residents, you have no excuse.
