PORTLAND, CT — Crews battled a fire in difficult conditions in Portland on Saturday night. The blaze ended up hospitalizing a resident and two firefighters, according to fire officials.
Firefighters spotted an active fire as they were returning to fire headquarters at 9:18 p.m. The fire was at an Evergreen Avenue home.
Crews responded within minutes. The fire had spread to the home's second floor and attic.
One resident was taken to the hospital. Another refused treatment. Two firefighters were hospitalized for heat exhaustion and have since been released.
Several other area fire departments responded to provide mutual aid.
"This was a very labor intensive fire and the high heat and humidity played a huge (role) in hindering our efforts," according to fire officials.
The fire marshal's office is investigating.
