EAST HAMPTON, CT — Police say they have seen a surge in thefts of valuables from vehicles in recent weeks.
Police Chief Dennis Woessner said Tuesday the incidents have been happening at various locations around town.
Woessner urged residents to always lock their car doors to decrease their chances of being victimized.
According to Woessner, surveillance videos captured by residents have shown people walking up to parked cars in driveways and trying to open vehicle doors.
“When they find it locked, they leave,” he said. “We have also seen videos of what happens when the doors are left unlocked.”
Police also urged residents to avoid confronting thieves. Instead, dial 911 immediately, Woessner advised.
“Some of them are known to carry guns or other weapons and it is not worth it to get injured protecting your personal property,” Woessner said.
