"Preliminary investigation indicates (a 2013 Ford Escape) was traveling in the right lane while (a 1999 Ford F250 Super Duty truck) was traveling alongside in the left lane," state police said. "For reasons still under investigation, (the Ford F250 Super Duty truck) entered the right lane and struck (the Ford Escape). Both vehicles then left the roadway, crossed the right shoulder, and collided with a metal-beam guardrail. The vehicles traveled through the guardrail, and (the Ford F250 Super Duty truck) subsequently struck a highway sign support post before both vehicles came to rest on an embankment along the right shoulder."

The driver of the Ford Escape was transported by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital with injuries. Barthell was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

The Connecticut State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (C.A.R.S.) responded and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or was traveling in the area at the time and may have dash camera footage is asked to contact Trooper Patrick Miko (#1353) at (203) 393-4200 or patrick.miko@ct.gov.
