East Hampton Board of Ed Hires New Assistant Principal

The East Hampton Board of Education voted Monday to appoint a 30-year-old East Lyme teacher as assistant principal of .

Christopher Discordia, a third-grade teacher at , will assume the new job in East Hampton when school starts next Tuesday.

Discordia succeeds Maryssa Edele, who is stepping down as assistant principal but will remain as a kindergarten teacher and special education staff member in the East Hampton school district, said board Chairman Mark Laraia.

The board, as well as members of the East Hampton district’s administration, applauded Discordia after announcing the decision. While the vote was unanimous, one board member, Carol Lane, was absent during the meeting.

Information wasn't available Monday evening on Discordia's salary.

Discordia is an East Lyme native who received his BA in education from Sacred Heart University. He also graduated from Sacred Heart with his master's degree, Discordia said.

When asked why he wanted the job in East Hampton, Discordia said a colleague of his who worked in East Hampton school district couldn’t say enough positive things about the experience. He said he visited the district and was impressed with all of the staff and faculty he encountered.

Discordia is also an ice hockey coach for Bacon, St. Bernard’s and Norwich Free academies, according to the high school sports website MaxPreps.com. Click here to see a video interview between Discordia and a Norwich Bulletin reporter earlier this year.
