ID Released For East Hampton Teen Who Died In Paddleboard Incident

Witnesses reported that the victim appeared to have a medical emergency and fell into the water, officials said.

EAST HAMPTON, CT — A 15-year-old from East Hampton who died after suffering a medical emergency while on a paddleboard has been identified, according to reports.

East Hampton Public Schools identified the teen as Cassandra “Cassie” Munson, according to WTNH News-8. She was a student in the district and was spending time with family and friends at Crystal Pond before her death.

Department of Energy & Environmental Protection’s EnCon Police responded to Crystal Pond in Eastford on a report of a person missing from a paddleboard at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses reported that the victim appeared to have a medical emergency and fell into the water, officials said.

The victim, later identified as Munson, was recovered by a good Samaritan who came out onto the pond to assist, said DEEP spokesman Bill Flood.

Munson received treatment onshore and was transported to Day Kimball Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Superintendent Timothy M. Van Tasel described Munson as "upbeat."

East Hampton Public Schools will offer grief counseling in the wake of the loss, according to Hearst Connecticut Media.

Van Tasel wrote in a statement that "it is very common to see tragedies such as this result in a myriad of emotions that are very difficult for all us to process — especially our young adults and children," according to WTNH News-8.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. The incident is under investigation by EnCon Police.
